Psychotherapy, often referred to as "talk therapy" or counseling, is a method of treating mental health issues by helping individuals understand their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. It involves a therapeutic relationship between a trained therapist and a client, where they engage in structured conversations aimed at exploring and resolving problematic beliefs, feelings, behaviors, relationship issues, and/or somatic responses (bodily sensations).
Through various techniques and modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, or humanistic approaches, psychotherapy aims to improve an individual's well-being and mental health, to resolve or mitigate troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts, or emotions, and to improve relationships and social functioning.
It's a collaborative process, providing a supportive environment that allows the individual to talk openly with someone who's objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental. This process not only helps individuals understand themselves and their problems better but also equips them with strategies to cope with new challenges.
